Game developer Niantic Labs, which was behind the immensely popular Pokemon Go, is working on a new augmented reality game, this time with an even more universal theme.
The developer is in fact working on a game based on the Harry Potter universe.
Niantic
The company has raised a massive $200 million in a funding round, from investors. Both the topic of the new game, as well as the success of Pokemon Go, have increased the amount of attention here, as that game only received $30 million in funding at the time.
The company had announced last month it was partnering with Warner Bros. to develop a new AR game based on the Harry Potter franchise. Titled ¡®Harry Potter: Wizards Unite¡¯, it¡¯ll supposedly allow players to learn spells, and then use them on creatures (and likely each other as well) found in the real world.
Hopefully, the cash infusion will allow Niantic to develop better infrastructure and larger dev teams for both Wizards Unite and Pokemon Go. The latter was plagued by server overloads at launch, despite the release being staggered across a month for various countries. In addition, players have also complained of prolific cheating, and a few bugs that make the game unplayable.
And if anything, there are going to be even more people playing Wizards Unite than there ever were for Pokemon Go. Perhaps this game may even be able to retain its player base over time.
