When Apple decided to go bezel-free with the iPhone X, their way of incorporating the front camera sensors and speakers was the notch. Samsung, it seems, believes it has a way better idea.?
Samsung has a new patent, spotted by LetsGoDigital, that describes a smartphone model with a full-panel display. Their way of fitting in the camera, speaker, and sensors on the front? Holes.
To be fair, that may not be as weird as it sounds. Basically, instead of piling everything on the front into a single notched area like Apple, Samsung wants to have multiple holes in the display. However, the phone will allow developers the freedom to code their apps for a full-panel display with the cutouts, or to just omit the thin strip at the top.
To have a truly bezel-less display, Apple decided to do away with its Home button and instead bring in FaceID (for unlock) and gesture controls or navigation. Here, Samsung has instead voted to keep the Home button at the bottom, accommodating it with another hole in the display. In addition, reports of Samsung working on a new chip with 3D face mapping and depth sensing point to it introducing its own version of FaceID as well.
Again, these are just patents so there¡¯s no guarantee they¡¯ll make it to production. Then again, they¡¯re the most promising patents we¡¯ve seen from Samsungs with regards to practicality. You never know, Galaxy fans might actually be able to get on board with displays sporting punch holes.
