Apple didn't have very good news for the users of its older iPad models at the recent WWDC event. The technology giant announced that it is dropping support for three older iPad models: iPad 2, iPad 3, and the first-generation iPad mini (first-generation).

This means that once Apple releases the latest version of its mobile operating system, iOS 10, millions of iPads will become obsolete. As according to a report in Zdnet, quoting Localytics, "...it could mean that some 40 percent of all iPads currently in use will become obsolete because they will no longer receive security updates and patches."
According to the report, as of March 2016, iPad 2 had 17% marketshare, iPad 3 held 9% and iPad mini's (first-generation) share stood at 15%. The numbers might have changed a bit since March, but a major shift is unlikely.

At WWDC 2016, Apple announced that the following devices will be compatible with iOS 10: iPad 4th gen, iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPad Pro, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, iPad mini 4, iPod touch 6th gen, iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPhone SE, iPhone 6/6 Plus and iPhone 6s/6s Plus.

Claiming to be Apple's "biggest iOS release ever", the iOS 10 now has a new lock screen with richer notifications, quick interaction options with apps, and 'raise to wake' feature. Users can directly jump inside apps and access more functions right from notification alerts. They can reply to text messages, view live status update for Uber, and even clear all app notifications with one tap.

Users can swipe up to access quick controls and swipe over on the same panel to access music controls as well. Sliding right from lock screen will fire up the camera app, while swiping to the other side will open up weather, calendar, music and more.
The iOS 10 also boasts of better 3D Touch integration with more number of apps. The OS also gives easy access to apps for payments, VoIP calling, Carplay and more with Siri. Apple also announced that Siri is opening up for developers too.

The Quick type now comes with deep learning and intelligent suggestions. The feature along with Siri's AI power can throw more intelligent response, can autofill calendars based on chat information, autofill address while copy pasting, and recognize movies and restaurants.

As for Photos, all photos can now be seen on a map based on where they were shot. Deep learning can now sort images based on facial recognition, objects and scenes. The app also has a new feature called Memories. It assembles images and movies into an animated slideshow. Users can change the images and music of the slideshow according to different moods.
