Apple has historically shied away from betting too big on artificial intelligence (AI) tools, even when tools like ChatGPT have made a huge impact on how we perceive the internet. Now, it appears that Apple is trying to catch up.
Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple has stated on numerous occasions that Apple has been investing in AI, but nothing tangible has come out of it yet. According to a new report, three of Apple's executives will be spearheading various generative AI departments. Apple is reportedly spending $1 billion annually on its AI ambitions.
Mark Gurman, in a newsletter update, stated that Apple executives have been "scrambling" since last year to make up for all lost time. Apple is in the process of building AppleGPT but the chatbot is only available internally with no plans about what do to next.

Apple executives John Giannandrea and Craig Federighi, along with Eddy Cue, head of Apple services, have been tasked to lead the company's AI efforts. The company could spend $1 billion annually for this purpose.
Giannandrea is said to be "overseeing development" of the technology for developing a new AI system, including a revamped Siri. Federighi is working on adding AI features to the next version of iOS - making Siri and Messages more predictive.
For Cue, the task is to bring generative AI to as many applications as possible. This will start as new features for Apple Music and Pages. Executives are also assessing the pros and cons of deploying AI as an on-device experience, a cloud-based setup, or something else.
