Disney's new artificial intelligence system is able re-age actors. In other words, it can make actors look younger or older.
Disney calls it "re-ageing" and the tool is called Face Re-ageing Network (FRAN). It can make actors look younger as well as older. According to Gizmodo, the AI can speed up visual effects processes that usually take weeks.
FRAN eliminates the need to paint each 2D frame of an actor's face, or replacing them with a digital puppet. FRAN takes over most of the works by complementing "traditional re-ageing techniques that already work well in film production," Disney researchers wrote in a paper.
The AI tool was designed by Disney to work with overlaying alterations like wrinkles in specific parts wherein there should be more or less of the same.
At the same time, it leaves other parts untouched - operating on separate layers to help artists streamline the results.

For FRAN to become "production-ready," Disney had to create a database of thousands of randomly generated faces, which was then altered using age modification tools. Like all AI tools, FRAN got better with more data.
Even then, FRAN isn't perfect. While it does a good job, it is not able to depict the peculiar physical realities of ageing. With its current capabilities, it can still help save time for VFX artists.
