Search engine giant Google and social media gargantuan Facebook have announced their newest collaboration -- a subsea cable system for enabling faster and more reliable internet connectivity across the Asia-Pacific region for the year 2024.

The project has been named Apricot and the creation of this subsea cable is expected to connect Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Guam, the Philippines and Indonesia to quench the thirst for broadband access and 5G wireless connectivity, according to Facebook.?
In case you remember, in March this year, Facebook had announced two new transpacific subsea cables bringing Singapore, Guam, Indonesia and the US west coast together via Bifrost (developed by Facebook) and Echo (developed by Google).

The newer Apricot cable along with Echo are complementary submarine systems that, according to Google, will allow benefits with multiple paths in and out of Asia. This includes newer routes through southern Asia, thatĄ¯ll enable a considerably higher degree of resilience for Google Cloud and digital services.?
The cables together will help Asian nations with lower latency, more bandwidth, and stronger connectivity between Southeast Asia, North Asia and the United States.
According to Facebook, the newly installed cables have an initial design capacity of over 190 terabits per second.

Apricot will be a part of GoogleĄ¯s global network of subsea cables, which includes Curie, Dunant, Equiano, Firmina and Grace Hopper, and consortium cables like JGA, INDIGO and Havfrue. Google has revealed that it has invested in 18 subsea cables, alongside their 27 cloud regions and 82 zones globally.
