Google is working on a new Android feature that will automatically enable Aeroplane Mode during a flight. Even though the signals eventually disappear from your smartphone as the flight gains altitude, it's advisable to put your smartphone on Aeroplane or Airplane Mode before the flight takes off.
Google's automatic Aeroplane Mode functionality takes the onus off each user when they're on a flight. The current functionality also shuts down most connectivity features on the smartphone when it is turned on, although most phones allow you to use Bluetooth and WiFi in Aeroplane Mode.
According to a report by ParkiFly in collaboration with David Kowalski, it appears that Google has filed a patent for a connected flight mode. When users are onboarding a flight, it should be able to automatically switch the mode on.
The phone will essentially look out for pressure drop, acceleration, cabin sounds, GPS signal, ultrasonic signal, cellular ID, and WiFi signal to disable automatic backups, background application refresh, and other updates, the patent filings reveal.

In addition, Google might also access travel booking activity and check-in status to automatically enable this feature on the smartphone. While Aeroplane Mode is on as part of this functionality, connectivity features like WiFi and Bluetooth will be turned on automatically.
Once the user lands, the feature will also restore all features to normal mode by reactivating cellular connections and standard settings.
