In this COVID-19 lockdown, tech is the one thing that is coming to our rescue. Whether it is killing time by streaming stuff online or the easement of tracking COVID-19 cases in a locality using contact-tracing apps, we¡¯re making the most of tech.?
And now, Google¡¯s parent company Alphabet will be helping kids in the US get the books they want from their local library in the coolest way possible.
Recently, with lockdown shutting access for people to step out of their homes, kids have suffered the most, not getting the books they need for their academics.?
These kids mostly come from backgrounds that can¡¯t afford to own a Kindle or iPads or even purchase books and heavily rely on the books lent by the library.?
To help them, a librarian for Montgomery County Public Schools in Christiansburg pitched the idea to Wing to use its services to offer books to kids in need, and they were happy to do so.?
Alphabet has an experimental drone delivery service under its lineup called Wing that was designed for making deliveries in a city or town. It is being used regularly by the citizens of Christiansburg for getting groceries from nearby stores.
Students in Christiansburg can submit a request for books in the school district's library system and Passek will pull the book from the library in one of Wing's custom delivery containers.
A regular Wing user herself, Passek said in a conversation with the Washington Post, ¡°I think kids are going to be just thrilled to learn that they are going to be the first in the world to receive a library book by drone.¡±
The drone delivery service will now cater to over 600 students in Christiansburg. The idea is truly fantastic as the drone delivery will eliminate the danger of human contraction and since it won¡¯t get stuck in traffic, the drops can be seamless and swift.?
The library hasn¡¯t really revealed if there will be a late fee for books that come back in late, but the whole process is truly novel nonetheless.?
