Truecaller is definitely one of the most used smartphone apps in India. This anti-spammer app with its ability to warn us beforehand to ward-off annoying telecallers has always come in handy.
However, when you find out what Truecaller was doing to its existing users (or their bank accounts) you might think twice to install this app, or even uninstall it if you have it on your phone already.
Many Truecaller?users since Tuesday morning have been reporting that the app was sending an encrypted message from the user's phone to sign them up for UPI without any intimation or consent by its users, post which ICICI Bank sends a message stating, "Your registration for UPI app has started."
Users running the latest version of Truecaller on Android (10.41.6.) are currently victims of this issue. What's surprising is that people who don't have an ICICI account also got the message.
Needless to say, people affected with this issue have shared their problems not just on Twitter but also on Truecaller's comment section on the Google Play Store app page.?
Responding to this chaos, Truecaller issued an official statement where it said, "We have discovered a bug in the latest update of Truecaller that affected the payments feature, which automatically triggered a registration post updating to the version. This was a bug and we have discontinued this version of the app so no other users will be affected."
Frankly, it's absurd how such a big bug passed under the radar of Truecaller's quality standards and came right into the consumer build of their app. We strongly advise users to update their Truecaller app to the latest version to stay safe from the bug.
