Google's new mode for Maps wants to make the entire navigation experience highly immersive. During the annual Google I/O keynote, Google announced its Maps' new "Immersive View" that lets users get a feel of the nook and crannies of any spot before visiting it.
As the name suggests, "Immersive View" is designed to take the user through the streets before they actually physically venture out. All images in Google Maps' "Immersive View" are computer generated, combining Google's satellite imagery and its Street View images.
The Immersive View may be especially useful to tourists who want to visit famous spots. The mode will essentially guide users through any area in the world (eventually!) - showing the users what it looks like at different parts of the day and in different weather conditions. The new mode will also show "helpful information like live busyness and nearby traffic."

Thinking of going to a restaurant in the same neighbourhood you're planning to explore? Google says you can get a glimpse of the vibe of any restaurant before you even set foot outside of your house.
It is compatible with all devices that can run Google Maps. For starts, Immersive View is being rolled out for a select few cities like Los Angeles, New York, London, San Francisco, and Tokyo before the end of 2022. Google Maps' VP Miriam Daniel wrote in a blog post that Immersive View will be expanded to other cities eventually.
This is all due to the magic of artificial intelligence, Google claims. In the blog post, Daniel also wrote about "Live View," an AR-based method to help people walk around cities. " It's especially helpful when navigating tricky indoor areas, like airports, malls and train stations." Live View runs on Google's AI-based tech called "global localization" that helps users go "where you need to go in a matter of seconds."
