Do you ever pick up a call excitedly only to find out it's spam? Don't worry, this phenomenon has bumped India's position from 9th to 4th in Truecaller's top 20 most spammed countries.
The Global Spam Report by Truecaller makes some striking points. For starters, a single spammer in India made about 202 million spam calls between January to October in 2020.
Globally, Truecaller identified 184.5 billion calls and 586 billion messages. "Of those, 7.8 billion spam calls were identified and blocked while 182 billion messages were identified and blocked," the report said.
According to the company, the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has affected communication behaviour, while also adding to spam patterns globally. Even though scam calls in India reduced from 9 to 1.4 per cent, the most common scams in India correspond to OTP and KYC.
Fraudsters attempt to dupe people by pretending to represent a bank, a wallet, or digital payment service for KYC documents that are now mandated by the Reserve Bank of India.

Most spam calls in India were about sales (93.5 per cent), followed by financial services (3.1 per cent), nuisance (2 per cent), and scams (1.4 per cent).?Globally, Brazil topped the list for the country with most number of spam calls per user (about 30-35), followed by Peru, Ukraine, India, and Mexico.
The data for Truecaller's conclusions was based on incoming and outgoing calls & messages between January 1, 2021 and October 31, 2021. Truecaller claims to have identified 184.5 billion calls and 586 billion spam SMS' around the globe.
