The numbers are out for the latest 4G speed test by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
Reliance Jio continued to dominate the charts when it came to download speeds in August, but Vodafone is king when it comes to upload speeds.
It's been about three years since Jio entered the market and upended the industry hierarchy, and they've held that top spot for best download speeds ever since. In August, the company posted an average speed of 21.3 Mbps across India, a slight improvement from its 21.0Mbps in July.
Vodafone meanwhile achieved a 5.5 Mbps average upload speed with its 4G connections in August. They unfortunately saw a decline from 5.8 Mbps in July.
Bharti Airtel seems to have dipped drastically in performance this month, dropping down to 8.2 Mbps from 8.8 Mbps in July. And though Vodafone and Idea Cellular have since merged their business and their networks under Vodafone Idea, TRAI is still publishing their performance separately.?
Vodafone registered an average 4G download speed of 7.7Mbps in August, flat from the previous month. Idea meanwhile registered a decline 6.6 Mbps in July to 6.1 Mbps.
Both the Airtel and Idea networks experienced a slight decline in average 4G upload speeds, registering at 3.1 Mbps and 5.1 Mbps respectively. Jio Meanwhile improved its upload speed to 4.4 Mbps.
All of this is based on data gathered by TRAI using its real-time MySpeed app.
Of course, though this little bit of growth is good, we're still miles behind the global standard. Taken all together, India's collective telcos have an average mobile data download speed of 10.65 Mbps and 4.23 Mbps for upload speeds. That places us at the 131st rank on the list of countries with the best speeds, led by South Korea, Australia, and Qatar.
We clearly have a long way to go, and a lot of people still left to connect to the Internet.
