The Indian government is working to create a policy to encourage the creation of an indigenous operating system to fight against two of the most popular smartphone OSes on the planet -- iOS and Android.?

The idea was revealed by Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar in an interview with PTI.?
Chandrasekhar highlighted that the mobile phone OS is currently dominated by Google and Apple, "There is no third one. Therefore, in a lot of ways there is tremendous interest in MeitY and in the Government of India to even create a new handset operating system. We are talking to people. We are looking at a policy for that."
According to Chandrashekhar, the government is looking for capabilities within start-up and academic ecosystems for the development of the made-in-India operating system.?
Chandrasekhar added, "If there is some real capability then we will be very much interested in developing that area because that will create an alternative to iOS and Android which then an Indian brand can grow."
He further iterated that the government is relooking at the policies and policy tools in order to reimagine goals and ambitions. Chandrasekhar, along with Minister for Communications and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw released the second edition of Vision Document on Electronics Manufacturing that was developed by the industry body ICEA.?

The document highlights a roadmap for achieving $300 billion in electronics manufacturing and $120 billion in exports in the nation by the year 2026. Today this level maxes out at $75 billion and $15 billion respectively.?
