Artificial intelligence's impressive analytical capabilities for large data sets makes it an ideal tool to mete out exact solutions that can trigger action on the ground, especially for long-term issues like climate change.
Now, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has teamed up with tech giant IBM to unearth new information from NASA's large collection of data about Earth. The joint project will apply AI foundation models to NASA's Earth-observing satellite data for the first time, figuring out new ways to make climate data more readily available for research and scientific discovery.
What are foundation models, you wonder? As IBM explained, foundation AI models are trained on a large range of unlabelled data that may be used to perform different tasks. Such models can apply information about one situation to another.
As part of this project, the first AI model will be trained on 300,000 earth science publications to organise literature based on themes, allowing easier access to the same.
For the second model, data from US Geological Survey and NASA's Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 (HLS) will be used to do a myriad of things - from detecting natural hazards to tracking changes in vegetation and wildlife habitats, a press release stated.

This effort can have long-term impacts on how concerns surrounding climate change are addressed. Currently, timely access to analysed data remains an impediment that can be overcome by the powers of artificial intelligence.
Various AI foundation models like OpenAI's ChatGPT are currently gaining traction around the world and various companies are already leveraging the power of such AI bots to make their products smarter and quicker.

But this effort will mark the first time such AI solutions are applied in the domain of earth science. While most contemporary AI models focus on content creation, this IBM-NASA effort will focus on expanding AI foundation models to areas like climate and even code, drug discovery, and more.
