What's a metaverse ecosystem without a pair of fancy kicks? Shoemaker Nike agrees. One of the world's most well-known shoemakers, Nike just bought a virtual shoe company that specialises in shoe NFTs for the metaverse.
Nike announced the acquisition of RTFKT Studios on Monday. "This acquisition is another step that accelerates Nike¡¯s digital transformation and allows us to serve athletes and creators at the intersection of sport, creativity, gaming and culture," John Donahoe, Nike's CEO and President announced in a presser.
RTFKT was founded in 2020 by Benoit Pagotto, Chris Le, and Steven Vasilev and makes digital collectibles, or in other words - nun-fungible tokens (NFTs).
In February, RTFKT sold real sneakers bundled with virtual shoes in collaboration with teenage artist FEWOCiOUS. In just six minutes, the company sold 600 pairs (NFTs) worth over $3.1 million.
?The idea is simple - once different metaverses are effectively up and running, we'll all need shoes, right? To this end, Nike couldn't have passed up on this opportunity.

As the metaverse hype continues to intensify, more companies are getting on board the idea of having digital equivalents. People are paying whopping amounts for virtual real estate on metaverse platforms.
