In this story, we'll focus on five signature features/offerings of the newly launched OnePlus Open, as advertised by the company.
The OnePlus sports a "Flexion Hinge" that the company claims was designed to be durable and light. Unlike most hinges designed for foldable devices, the OnePlus Open Flexion Hinge has a single-spine architecture. This makes efficient integration possible between components and the structure, the company notes. Owing to this, the company was able to reduce the number of parts required to make the hinge to 69. According to OnePlus, most hinges on foldables require over 100 parts. By reducing the number of components, OnePlus claims to have reduced the weight.
With OnePlus Open, the Chinese company has introduced the new LYTIA "Pixel Stacked" image sensor. The 1/1.43-inch "Pixel Stacked" CMOS sensor is apparently on the same level as the Sony IMX989, according to OnePlus.
Sony's LYTIA T808 (LYT-T808) has a the 1/1.43-inch large sensor. This technology is also referred to as "Dual-Layer Transistor Pixel" technology. This way, light intake becomes better. Unlike regular IMX image sensors, the Pixel Stacked sensor separates two layers of pixel transistors. This way, space is used proactively and more light can come in, helping create images with more dynamic range and improved quality.
The OnePlus Open is the first foldable with a switch on the side. OnePlus calls it the Alert Slider that has been scaled to work on the the foldable. OnePlus claims that the height and width of the module has been reduced by 1.7mm and 1mm respectively compared to the OnePlus 11.
On OxygenOS 13.2, Open Canvas introduces a desktop-like taskbar at the bottom of the expanded screen. This way, access to apps is made easier. A "Recent" folder on the taskbar helps user access recently saved images, documents, and more. The taskbar may be fixed at the bottom of the display for easy access. The phone supports dual splits, drag and drop sharing, and triple splits, among many features.
For a foldable, the OnePlus Open is quite light. The phone weighs 239 grams and has a thickness of 5.8mm when unfolded and 11.7mm when folded. In comparison, the iPhone 14 Pro Max weighs 240g.
