India distributed the latest batch of its Padma Awards on January 26, 2022. Spread across three categories, the Padma Awards cover a variety of disciplines from art, public affairs, to science and engineering and are considered the highest form of civilian honour in the country.
Out of the 128 Padma Awards that were handed out, many belonged to Indian pioneers in science and engineering. Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay was among many people who received the Padma Shri in science and engineering. The first woman director of the Indian Statistical Institute, Dr Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay is a computer scientist with expertise in artificial intelligence.
After completing her PhD from the Machine Intelligence Unit of the Indian Statistical Institute in 1999, she joined the same institute as a faculty member. Currently, Dr Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay is serving her second tenure as Director of the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI).
According to ISI's website, Dr Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay has worked with various institutes and universities of the world - in the US, Australia, Germany, France, Italy, China, Slovenia, and Mexico among many.

Currently, Dr Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay's areas of interests include computational biology and bioinformatics. That's not all! Padma Shri awardee Dr Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay is also interested in evolutionary computation, pattern recognition, and data mining.
The current director of Indian Statistical Institute, Dr Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay has authored/co-authored over 300 research articles in various journals of international value.
In addition to these wide-ranging achievements, Dr Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay has also authored and edited books from publishers like Springer, World Scientific, and Wiley.

Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay's diverse work is exemplified in awards conferred to her - ranging from Bhatnagar Prize, Infosys award, TWAS Prize, DBT National Women Bioscientist Award (Young), INAE Silver Jubilee Prize, Young scientist/engineer medals of INSA, INAE and Science Congress, JC Bose Fellowship among many. Currently, she is a member of the Science, Technology, and Innovation Advisory Council of the Prime Minister of India (PM-STIAC).
