When most of India slept around midnight on Tuesday, Samsung unveiled its flagship lineup for the year at its Galaxy Unpacked 2020 event in San Francisco, California. It was only the next morning when most of Indian tech-enthusiasts would wake up to a whole new series of smartphones with a completely redefined camera architecture, one that boasts of a 108MP camera lens and an ability to zoom up to 30X!
Impressed? This is just the beginning of what will form the Samsung S20 lineup. As Samsung¡¯s first, full 5G flagship lineup, three smartphones were launched - S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra. ¡°As we enter this new decade, 5G will completely change how we communicate and how we experience the world around us,¡± were the words of Dr. TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics.
Samsung says that all the three smartphones can deliver non-standalone as well as standalone 5G capabilities. While the Galaxy S20 works on a sub-6 spectrum (frequencies under 6GHz but above the low-band frequencies), the S20+ and S20 Ultra work on both sub-6 as well as mmWave for their 5G connections.
Another aspect of the S20 series that comes as a highlight is the camera architecture. Here is a look at what makes the cameras on the Galaxy S20 series stand out!
Samsung claims to have increased the camera resolution significantly on the Galaxy 20 series, all thanks to the biggest image sensor the company has used in its smartphones yet. While the Galaxy S20 and S20+ use a 64MP camera, the S20 Ultra bumps it up to a 108MP camera.
In addition, the S20 Ultra comes with a nona-binning technology which combines nine pixels into one at the sensor level. As a result, it can shift dynamically between a high resolution 108MP mode and a 12MP mode. This further helps the already capable low-light photography of the device through its large sensor that can take in more light.
The Galaxy S20 series smartphones come with a Space Zoom technology that comprises a combination of Hybrid Optic Zoom and Super Resolution Zoom. The result is that the Galaxy S20 and S20+ can deliver a zoom of up to 30X while the S20 Ultra promises a Super Resolution Zoom up to 100X.
Just in case you need a device with the premium video shooting capability, Galaxy S20 series has you covered with an 8K video shooting. Backing this for a professional level shoot is super steady and anti-rolling stabilization as well as AI motion analysis. Once done, you can stream the 8K video directly to a device or maybe even grab a screenshot of it for a high-resolution photo.
To think of it, a 5G connection coupled to such a high-standard camera capability is enough to please content creators and consumers alike. Naturally, the two empower some of the most sought after functions on the Galaxy S20 series. Entertainment, for instance, will now be backed by faster streaming in the best video quality through a 5G connection. Samsung also says that it is working on improving its integration with Netflix to make the search for any content through Bixby and other Samsung platforms much easier.
A similar experience can be expected from YouTube, which will allow a direct upload of 8K resolution videos through a fast 5G connection. Google Duo will also experience similar fast speeds on FHD video calls, now with even more features on the S20 series smartphones.
As for the gaming experience on the devices, Samsung mentions a 120Hz display, a fast processor, 12GB of RAM7, audio tuned by AKG and a game booster working in the background to optimize settings for peak performance to be the highlights.
Samsung has also introduced a new interface called the One UI 2 with the S20 smartphones. The UI supports smart homes with SmartThings, Samsung Health, Samsung Pay as well as Samsung¡¯s ¡°cleanest, simplest, most intuitive interface yet¡±.
To back all of these operations, the Galaxy S20 series comes with ample battery backup - i.e. 4000 mAh, 4500 mAh and 5000 mAh batteries for the S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra respectively. While the former two come with 25W fast charger, the S20 Ultra supports 45W Super fast charging. The entire series is equipped with good storage - i.e. 128GB for S20; 128GB, 256GB and 512GB for Galaxy S20+ and S20 Ultra.
The Galaxy S20 series will be available starting March 6, 2020 in colours like Cosmic Grey, Cosmic Black, Cloud Blue and Cloud Pink spread across variants.
