COVID-19 is showing no signs of stopping. However, while this battle is still nowhere close to its end, with the news of the effectiveness of the new vaccines, we are hopeful that we would soon be able to get things under control.
The first to reveal an effectiveness rating of over 90 percent was the vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech.?
However, just a few days later, Russia¡¯s Sputnik V came out stating that its vaccine is 92 percent effective against the novel coronavirus. After that, we saw Modena come up and show?that it¡¯s 94.5 percent effective against SARS CoV-2.
However, just last week, Pfizer came up once again, stating that its vaccine is 95 percent effective too. And now, Russian authorities have revealed that Sputnik V too is 95 percent effective against the novel coronavirus.
This is according to a report by news agency AFP. A second interim analysis of clinical trial data revealed that it¡¯s 95 percent effective. Russia's health ministry, the state-run Gamaleya research centre and the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) said in a statement that The calculations were based on preliminary data that arrived 42 days after the first dose.
While this sounds like good news, we should most definitely take this with a pinch of salt, as they did not note the number of cases used to make the calculation, which leaves some ambiguity in the claim.?
Sputnik V is soon expected to commence its Phase 2 & 3 human trials in India at Kanpur¡¯s Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Medical College. Over 180 volunteers have already registered for the trials.?
Yesterday we also saw that the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine showed in its trials that it is 70 percent effective against COVID-19.?
However, researchers have mentioned that providing a light dose in the beginning and a stronger dose the second time has boosted the effectiveness to 90 percent.?
