According to multiple directives from the government of India, as you probably already know, you need to verify and link your mobile number and bank account with your Aadhaar by March 31, 2018.
At least, you had to had to anyway. That is until the Supreme Court stepped in...
Today, the Supreme Court once again extended the deadline to link your Aadhaar, made mandatory to avail various services and welfare schemes run by the government. The date has been pushed until a Constitution Bench rules on a batch of petitions challenging the validity of the Aadhaar Act.
Chief Justice Dipak Misra, and Justices AK Sikri, AM Khanwilkar, DY Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan comprise a Constitution Bench that will hear pleas for a stay on the mandatory Aadhaar linking order for welfare schemes, banks and phone numbers. This also puts a temporary stop to the government¡¯s plans to make linking your Aadhaar card to your driver¡¯s licence and voter ID mandatory, as was the plan.
The government has insisted the measures have been an attempt to weed out fraudulent transactions and black money, though many have criticized the program as insecure, and in violation of a right to privacy.
