WhatsApp will now allow users to better manage storage on their device. For this, the Facebook-owned chat app has brought in new features that let users review content, which is shared through the app, in bulk for better storage optimisation.
The features include several nifty ways in which users can have more control over the data exchanged through the app. As per a release by WhatsApp, the new features will be rolled out to the app¡¯s users worldwide this week. Users can wait for it and download the update from the Play Store or the App Store as and when it is available.
The bucket of features comes as an important addition to the app. As most of the multimedia is shared among contacts through WhatsApp, media files from the app can easily eat up a large chunk of a device¡¯s storage. The storage management tools being introduced will allow users to keep a strict check on the same.
Once the update is available to a user, the new WhatsApp tool can be accessed by going to Settings and visiting Storage and data. Under the section, users can click on the option Manage storage.
The Manage Storage page will provide three options for better storage management to users. First of these, is a Storage bar, which highlights the amount of storage that WhatsApp occupies from the total storage capacity of the smartphone.
The other option is ¡®Review and delete items¡¯ which further segregates data into two categories - ¡®Forwarded many times¡¯ and ¡®Larger than 5MB.¡¯ The former option helps in deleting media files that have been forwarded multiple times and hence take unnecessary storage space on your device. The latter highlights the files that consume the maximum space on your device¡¯s storage.
The third option is ¡®Chats¡¯ that displays all the media files from a particular chat or group chat at a single place. This data is also organised into a list based on the size of the data.
The announcement of the new storage management tools follows the rollout of disappearing messages on WhatsApp to the app¡¯s users. The new feature allows the users to send messages that vanish by themselves after seven days. You can read all about the WhatsApp disappearing messages here.
