Beyond all the recent cacophony of Alexa*s echoes, the Kindle Paperwhite will always remain Amazon*s best product in my book. Sure, the potential of voice-based computing is opening up a whole new interactive frontier, but the art of the written word is still worth celebrating, which is what the new Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition 2021 is all about.
I say this as a proud owner of the original Kindle Paperwhite which debuted back in 2012, which continues to serve me well to this day despite getting a bit rusty. The new Kindle Paperwhite excels and outperforms the original in almost every single metric you can imagine, making it a must-have for anyone looking to upgrade their e-book reader in 2022.
Refreshed after three years, the 2021 edition is the fifth generation of Kindle Paperwhite, which sits between the basic entry-level Kindle line and the more expensive Kindle Oasis. And the new Kindle Paperwhite does a very good job of taking some of the better functions from the pricier Kindle Oasis and offering them at a more affordable price for Kindle users without upsetting their budget.
If you*re a Kindle user, you*d be hard pressed to find anything wrong with the new Kindle Paperwhite. It*s only in its size that the new Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition 2021 feels a bit &off*, if anything 每 especially when you hold it in your hand for the first couple of days. Not for its thickness or weight 每 oh no, the Paperwhite continues to be thin and light 每 but its width. The new Kindle Paperwhite*s screen is slightly bigger along its length and width, and its bottom screen bezel feels the same old size in your palm, making it slightly tricky to adjust your grip and hold it in the beginning. But this minor irritant lasts only for a few days until you get used to holding the Kindle Paperwhite in different configurations 每 left hand, right hand, thumb on bezel, thumb along the edge, etc. It*s smooth sailing after this minor speed bump.
While the new Kindle Paperwhite still doesn*t get any physical page scroll buttons 每 another slight bummer 每 it makes up for it with a bunch of new upgrades. The Kindle Paperwhite*s e-ink screen has a few more LEDs to pump up its brightness, a larger 1,700 mAh battery to keep it going for multiple months in stand-by mode, and a slightly improved processor to keep that lag away. There's 32GB of storage, which translates into thousands of books, so no problem of ever running out of space.
My personal favourite feature on the Kindle Paperwhite has to be its USB Type-C charging port, which takes all the hassle out of juicing it up going forward. Far from missing the micro-USB port on older Paperwhites, The Type-C port on the new Kindle Paperwhite removes all the stress of finding a compatible charging cable, makes charging the ebook reader an absolute breeze and future proofs the device for another decade easily. The device also supports wireless Qi charging with compatible chargers, for what it*s worth.
The Kindle Paperwhite 2021 perfectly highlights some of the Kindle operating system updates Amazon released late last year, with a brand new homepage to show off your digital bookshelf with books you*re currently reading more prominently. Amazon has also taken a leaf out of smartphone OSes to allow some swipe down setting options to be accessible from anywhere on the Paperwhite*s screen.?
Stuff like adjusting screen brightness, screen warmth, toggle settings for dark mode and airplane mode, and syncing your Kindle instantaneously can now happen at the click of a button, regardless of whether you*re on a book*s page or on the home screen. This is a welcome new addition that should make every Kindle user*s life slightly more convenient.
Amazon*s claim of increased battery life on the new Kindle Paperwhite 2021 is a bit difficult to verify, and not for the lack of trying 每 it*s because of its amazingly long-lasting life between charges, I haven*t had a chance to exhaust it yet to be honest. Stuff like page scrolls in a book or performing different actions on the screen, not to mention its brightness level, will ultimately decide how long the Kindle Paperwhite*s battery lasts on a single charge. But Amazon has improved its standby battery mode 每 the period when your Kindle Paperwhite is inactive, just lying on your desk 每 and I can easily say even after a month*s use, I*m in no rush to recharge my new Paperwhite*s battery just yet.
What is undoubtedly clear is how fast and speedy the new Kindle Paperwhite feels when compared to the older editions. The faster processor speeds up absolutely everything on the Paperwhite 每 everything happens faster, from page turns to swipe down menus. This reason alone is enough to upgrade to the new Kindle Paperwhite, if you ask me, because it enhances your overall experience in quite a few ways.
As the new year book reading marathons begin, I can*t think of a better e-book reader to recommend than the new Kindle Paperwhite 2021 for anyone who wants to continue enjoying reading books in a convenient format without actually accumulating a huge physical library that stays locked in your home. Sure, it lacks the tell-tale fragrance of a brand new book you open for the very first time since it was published, intoxicating you with its endearing aroma with every page turn. But for everything else, the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition 2021 is a near perfect buy, an absolute no-brainer.
