Weather prediction is an extremely data-intensive and processor-intensive task, and getting those predictions right increasingly means the difference between life and death -- what with wild weather events become increasingly common all over the world, including here in Mumbai and other parts of India.
In this regard, researchers have developed an AI that takes weather prediction to a whole new level of accuracy like never before.

We already know the different ways in which artificial intelligence can help us fight climate change, and now?there is an advanced computer model which can help us identify potential severe weather faster and more accurately than ever before.
Thanks to the breakthrough work conducted by a team of researchers at Penn State, AccuWeather, and University of Almer¨ªa in Spain,?machine learning and artificial intelligence is being used to detect rotational movements in clouds from satellite images -- something that has been hitherto overlooked by weather forecasters.
Researchers used 50,000 historical images of US weather satellite to identify "comma-shaped" clouds, which are associated with cyclone formations and extreme weather events across North America.

These images were then fed into the machine learning model with computer vision techniques to identify the dangerous cloud formation in real-time by the AI to start predicting extreme weather events.
The result? The detection rate for comma-shaped clouds was at 99 percent accuracy, with 40 seconds per prediction. Based on this, the AI was able to predict severe weather events with an accuracy of 64 percent, greatly outperforming other existing weather prediction models.
