Claiming that artificial intelligence can do it all might sound far-fetched at the moment, but with the right training, AI tools could unlock answers in avenues that have plagued humanity for the longest time, including disease management and prevention.
An artificial intelligence tool was able to develop a treatment for cancer in less than 30 days. It went a step forward and predicted a patient's survival rate as well.?These findings were outlined in a study published in the journal Chemical Science by researchers at the University of Toronto along with Insilico Medicine. Together, they developed a potential treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) through an AI drug discovery platform called Pharma.AI.
Considered the most common type of liver cancer, HCC occurs when a tumour grows on the liver.?
To develop a potential treatment, researchers used AlphaFold, an AI-powered protein structure database on Pharma.AI. It managed to find a target that was previously unknown for treatment against cancer and created a "novel hit molecule" that was able to bind to the target without any assistance.
According to the researchers, the potential drug was created in less than 30 days from the day the target was selected after synthesising just seven compounds. After another round, they discovered a more potent hit molecule. Even then, any drugs created from this study's findings would have to undergo clinical trials.

"While the world was fascinated with advances in generative AI in art and language, our generative AI algorithms managed to design potent inhibitors of a target with an AlphaFold-derived structure," said Alex Zhavoronkov, founder and CEO of Insilico Medicine, in a statement.
Scientists highlighted how AI can revolutionise drug discovery and development. For instance, in 2022, AlphaFold computer programme (developed by Alphabet's DeepMind) was able to predict protein structures for the entire human genome.
