Are you fascinated by mesmerising wonders of the universe? Thanks to fancy cameras and complementary tech, we're now able to see cosmic wonders in more detail than ever before.
An astronaut recently shared a stunning capture of a crescent moon above Earth as the last light from setting sun passes through different layers of our planet's atmosphere. The result? A breathtaking view of space that looks straight out of a painting.
The picture was clicked on December 6, 2021 by an unnamed member of the Expedition Crew 66 currently aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The crew consists of seven astronauts from global space agencies like NASA, European Space Agency (ESA), Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and Russia's space agency (Roscosmos).
The image was clicked by a handheld digital camera as the space station passed over the Pacific Ocean east of New Zealand at an altitude of 422 kilometres (262 miles), LiveScience reported.

In a statement, Earth Observatory representatives claimed that the "view offers a symbolic end to the year 2021 and a look toward NASA's next goal for human-crewed exploration." The image was shared by NASA's Earth Observatory on December 31, 2021.
The image shows sun's magic working through Earth's atmosphere - going from a bright orange to almost pitch dark towards the right. The layer above it also shows a stunning combination of blues stretching from one end to another.
The different colours represent different layers of the Earth's atmosphere - the troposphere, the stratosphere, and mesosphere, and the thermosphere.
The mosaic was produced by a phenomenon called Rayleigh scatting, wherein visible light is scattered by particles that are smaller than its wavelength. What we see in the image is the light of these different wavelengths.
