Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine Is Over 90% Effective, As Per Late-Stage Trials

COVID-19 is showing no signs of stopping and with each passing day, we hope to hear some news about the upcoming vaccines that are going to take down the novel coronavirus.?

And it looks like the vaccine being made by Pfizer and BioNTech is on the right track ahead.?

As per reports,?Pfizer and BioNTech have announced that their vaccine has been more than 90 percent effective in preventing SARS CoV-2 in people who weren’t affected by the novel coronavirus in the past.

Reported first by CNBC, this is according to the data published by the companies regarding their late-stage trial. The results were the outcome of an analysis led by the Data Monitoring Committee -- an independent group of experts that are making sure the trials in the US are being done safely and responsibly.?

As per the analysis, 94 confirmed COVID-19 infections were spotted in the trial of 43,538 participants. Looking at the case split between people who got the vaccine versus people who got the placebo revealed the efficacy rate of the vaccine to be over 90 percent, just seven days after the second dose of the vaccine. Basically, a body receives protection against the novel coronavirus in 28 days after the initial vaccination. The vaccination consists of a two-dose schedule.

It goes without saying that the final percentage for the efficacy of the vaccine may vary for every person however, authorities are still collecting additional data to strengthen the safety of the vaccine.?

Pfizer’s chairman and CEO Albery Bourla has called this development ‘a great day for science and humanity.’ He said, “We are reaching this critical milestone in our vaccine development program at a time when the world needs it most with infection rates setting new records, hospitals nearing over-capacity and economies struggling to reopen.”

He added, “With today’s news, we are a significant step closer to providing people around the world with a much-needed breakthrough to help bring an end to this global health crisis. We look forward to sharing additional efficacy and safety data generated from thousands of participants in the coming weeks.”
