Did an alien spaceship crash on Mars? Scientists recently said that an alien spaceship crash landing cannot be ruled out as the cause of strange protrusions found on the Red Planet.
In April, NASA's Curiosity Rover clicked pictures of rows of protrusions from the rocks on the floor of the Gale Crater. When it was made public, Dr Nathalie Cabrol of NASA's SETI Institute said that it was "the most bizarre rock" she had ever seen in the last 20 years of studying Mars.
A new paper published in the Journal of Astrobiology found that these formations might be "sand spikes," akin to those that form on Earth in water-logged sands after heavyweight earthquakes.
Even then, scientists warned that "a fragment from an extraterrestrial or terrestrial spacecraft cannot be discounted with absolute certainty." They added that some structures do appear to be wheels, an axle, and a debris field in a different part of the Gale Crater.

In the images taken by Curiosity, at least six rocks appear with strange protrusions, including one that has 11 evenly spaced spikes. Even then, often, strange formations on Mars look like familiar objects.
The new paper also says that it is unlikely that these strange objects are linked to human beings for they do not resemble anything sent from Earth.

"One can only speculate about extraterrestrial origins," the study claims while adding that "sand spikes" could be a plausible explanation. In addition, these spikes could also be caused by tiny microorganisams on Mars.
