NASA is going back to the Moon! The Artemis I mission is expected to take off from Cape Canaveral in Florida on August 29. Its spacecraft, Orion is carrying a lot of goodies for the 2 million-kilometre-long journey.
The goodies are part of a bundle referred to as the "official flight kit," carrying about 50 kgs of weird stuff. As required by American law, this kit enables NASA and its partners to use the items as awards or museum exhibits. There are a lot of stickers, flags, and pins that are flying to the Moon later today. Even then, some items do stand out.
The mission is without crew, meaning that there will be nobody to inform NASA that the spacecraft is in zero-gravity. To this end, NASA is using a Snoopy doll in the cabin as a visual zero-gravity indicator.
The famous comic strip beagle drawn by Charles M. Shulz has had a relationship with NASA for decades now.
Israel's space agency, NASA, and Boeing are sending tree seeds to the Moon. Once the flight is complete, the seeds will be distributed among schools for educational purposes.
NASA and the LEGO Group collaborated to send Kate, Kyle, Julia, and Sebastian to the Moon.?
The space agency and toy maker have also built an Artemis I "Build to Launch" lesson plan. Spanning 10 weeks, the series focuses on STEM careers and problem solving ?"similar to those the Artemis I team members face," NASA says.
Named after the Greek goddess Artemis, the mission will carry a small statue of the goddess. This statue is being sent by the European Space Agency. In Greek mythology, Artemis was Apollo's twin and a hunting goddess.
This 3D printed statue will later be displayed in the Acropolis Museum in Greece.
