'Adolescence', the Netflix series, is the only thing everyone is talking about these days. After a long time, a show that got popular through word-of-mouth is the four-episode series that has not only excelled due to its intriguing storyline but also because of its technical finesse and creativity.?
The show is highly praised across the globe, and some even believe this is the best show that Netflix has ever created. Apart from the creativity of the show, the debutant child actor, Owner Cooper, who played the role of Jamie Miller, has come out as a phenomenal performer and is believed to be the major reason behind the mega success of the series.?
Meanwhile, Stephen Graham, the co-creator and co-writer of the show, who played the role of Jamie's father, Eddie Miller, has also been receiving appreciation from across for his job. But did you know that Stephen Graham needed help to read the script because he suffers from a condition called dyslexia?
In 2019, during a BAFTA sessions panel, the 51-year-old English actor revealed that when it comes to reading the scripts, he takes help from his wife, actress Hannah Walters. He said, "I'm dyslexic, so I struggle. My missus actually reads the script and says whether or not I'm doing it. She's made some good choices.¡±
He mentioned that he has read it and read it and read it again, and then it makes it look like it's the first time he is saying it. But what is dyslexia? ¡°Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that can interfere with a person's ability to read, spell, and decipher words even though he or she has adequate teaching and experiences no other difficulties and has normal intelligence. Dyslexia is a main neurological (brain) disability and often runs in families,¡± says Dr. Vinit Banga, Director of Neurology, Fortis Hospital, Faridabad.?
A person with dyslexia typically experiences challenges with reading fluency, writing, and occasionally speaking. Dr. Banga says, ¡°A person with dyslexia specifically has difficulty hearing and manipulating the individual sounds of words (phonemes).¡±
¡°Common characteristics include difficulty reading, difficulty spelling, and slow retrieval of words. Dyslexia is not due to vision deficits or to a lack of intelligence. Rather, it is due to the way a person's brain processes written and/or spoken language,¡± adds Dr Banga.
Early detection and intervention using specialised teaching procedures that include phonics-based instruction can best assist a child or adult with dyslexia to develop and manage their reading.

Coping with dyslexia means understanding and accepting the unique nature of the student's learning. ¡°The best starting point will be to ask for formal support from a professional such as a speech language pathologist or a special education teacher, who can provide strategies to meet the individual¡¯s needs,¡± says Dr.Neha Pandita, Consultant-Neurology, Fortis, Okhla.
Dr. Pandita suggests, ¡°Utilise whatever tools are available to support reading, including audiobooks, text-to-speech software or even coloured overlays. Break tasks into smaller pieces, offer ample opportunity for practice and repetition, and create a positive, supportive learning space to foster confidence.¡±
It will also be important to keep in mind that patience and persistence will be key in supporting a learner with dyslexia, but it is also important to focus on your student's strengths when utilising techniques to address challenges. With encouragement and consistency, an individual with dyslexia can thrive.
