A.R. Rahman, the Oscar-winning music composer, was admitted to a private hospital in Chennai on Sunday, March 16, 2025, due to dehydration.
Taking to an Instagram post, his son A.R. Ameen shared a hospital statement mentioning that the legendary music composer was briefly discharged following a routine checkup. “To all our dear fans, family, and well-wishers, I sincerely thank you for your love, prayers, and support. My father felt a bit weak due to dehydration; hence, we went ahead and did some routine tests, but I’m happy to share that he is doing well now. Your kind words and blessings mean a lot to us. We truly appreciate your concern and continued support. Much love and gratitude to you all!” the post read.?
Ameen in the post thanked his fans for their warm wishes and said that A.R. Rahman was hospitalised due to dehydration. According to the doctors, the musician was feeling unwell due to dehydration as he had been fasting for Ramzan.
But can dehydration lead to chest pain, and what are the symptoms of dehydration? However, the doctors have cited dehydration. “Dehydration symptoms vary from mild to moderate to severe. In case of severe dehydration, which mandates hospitalisation, include low blood pressure and tachycardia, which means a higher heart rate of more than 100 per minute and more,” says Dr. Nasiruddin G., Consultant-Internal Medicine, Fortis Hospital, Cunningham Road.
According to a Hindu report, a source close to the family said that Mr. Rahman was rushed to the hospital after he complained of discomfort in his chest. However, his team has clarified that he was admitted to the hospital due to dehydration and neck pain from travel and refuted the reports of chest pain and heart issues.

Apart from the above-mentioned symptoms, other signs of severe dehydration may also include a dry tongue, loss of skin turgor, and cold, clammy skin. “If the condition of the patient worsens, the patient might develop loss of orientation, and here are the neurological manifestations that develop, such as coma. However, this happens when dehydration worsens from severe to very severe,” he adds.
Explaining dehydration can lead to chest pain, Dr. Nasiruddin goes on to say, “Any dehydration is a prothrombotic state, which is also known as hypercoagulability or thrombophilia, which is a condition where there's a higher risk of developing blood clots due to abnormalities in the blood coagulation system. Hence, if a patient has risk factors like atherosclerosis, which is high cholesterol causing vascular changes over a period of time, such patients, when they suffer dehydration, have more risk of procoagulant complications like heart attacks.”
“So chest pain can be an alarming symptom of an impending heart attack in patients who have been having dehydration. However, not all chest pain can be cardiac-related. In the case of A.R. Rahman, since he has been fasting for the past few days during Ramadan, there are chances that he is experiencing chest pain that can be simple gastritis, which may also develop because of fasting.”

Next comes obesity, which is rampant these days, lack of exercise, lack of sleep, and excessive amounts of stress. While other conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and eating unhealthy food are also some of the leading causes.
