Lee Joo-sil, the veteran actress who played Park Mal-soon in the hit series Squid Game, has sadly passed away at the age of 81. According to Korean newspaper The Chosun Ilbo, she died on Sunday, February 2, at her family home in Uijeongbu, South Korea, due to complications related to stomach cancer.
Prior to stomach cancer, Lee Joo Sil faced a devastating Stage 4 breast cancer diagnosis in her 50s when the doctors told her she only had one year to live. But instead of giving up, she fought back and defied the odds. She was given an all-clear 13 years later.
Unfortunately, Lee lost the battle to stomach cancer, which she was diagnosed with in November 2024.
Beyond Squid Game, Lee, born on March 8, 1944, was a part of many acclaimed Korean dramas and movies. With a career spanning over 50 years, she has made a name for herself in voice acting, stage productions, and screen appearances.
?Some of her notable works include stage productions of Death of a Salesman and Macbeth, as well as K-dramas like The Uncanny Counter and films like Commitment and Train to Busan.
Her other notable credits include the 2022 drama?It's Beautiful Now, the long-running series?Country Diaries?(1980-2002), and the recent KBS2 weekend drama?Beauty and Mr. Romantic.
She was also known for her roles in films like?A Single Spark,?Sikgaek?(also known as?Le Grand Chef), and many other titles. For her immense contribution to Korean cinema, she was honored with the Best Supporting Actress Award at the 2023 Wildflower Film Festival.
In Season 2 of the hit Netflix show?Squid Game, she played the role of Wi Ha-joon's mother.
Lee Joo-sil's funeral service is scheduled for February 5 at Sinchon Severance Hospital in South Korea.
