Tannaz Irani, a popular film and television actor, recently opened up about suffering excruciating pain due to hip replacement surgery.?
Speaking on a podcast called The Inner Habit, Tannaz Irani recalled the time when she was in a wheelchair and couldn't figure out what caused her misery.?
She continued to reveal that she was suffering from a life-altering health condition called vascular necrosis. After she was diagnosed with the disease, her mental health was also affected significantly.?
The actor further mentioned that she was diagnosed with the disease in 2021, and following that she even struggled to walk. Discussing what actually happened, Tannaz said that in 2021, she experienced a minor pain in the back after an injury that worsened with time.?
She shared that after experiencing the pain in the back, she got her checked to find out if something was wrong with her spine.?
She also went through a treatment of almost three months, which made her back a little better, but she still couldn't put weight on her leg. "Then I started limping, and that too in a very odd manner: I would take my leg and stick it out and put it back in (while walking). That became a motion I mastered so fast, and one could sense that there was something amiss. That worsened it. However, being an actress, I didn¡¯t want to give in,¡± she continued to mention on the podcast.?
Moreover, despite undergoing several tests and treatments, the symptoms continued to persist, and soon her ankles, knees, and back also got affected. Tannaz expressed that she became very depressed and suffered severe pain. "I didn¡¯t even want to live anymore," said Tannaz.?
Avascular Necrosis (AVN), often referred to as osteonecrosis, is caused by disintegration in the blood supply to the bone tissue, leading to death. ¡°When blood supply is affected, the bone becomes weak, brittle, and collapses. Over some time, the surrounding joint may also get affected. AVN usually affects the hips, knees, shoulders, and ankles, Dr. Shrey Srivastav, Internal Medicine, Sharda Hospital.
Incidence of AVN may be due to trauma, for example, fracture or dislocation, cutting blood supply to the bones. Dr. Srivastav, ¡°Non-traumatic causes include prolonged use of corticosteroids, excessive alcohol consumption, clinical treatment for sickle cell anaemia-associated blood disorders, and certain medical treatments like radiation and chemotherapy. Rarely, it occurs spontaneously without any symptoms, termed idiopathic AVN.¡±
Early AVN may be asymptomatic, gradually resulting in the affected joint being painful and stiff with reduced movement. Diagnosis is commonly via imaging techniques such as X-ray, MRI, or CT scan.
Depending on the stage and severity of AVN, treatment may be medical or surgical. Non-surgical treatment options include the use of drugs, physical therapy, and lifestyle alteration. In advanced cases, if symptoms do exist, surgical procedures such as core decompression, bone grafting, or replacement surgery may be required to restore function and ease discomfort.
According to Dr. Vinit Banga, Director of Neurology, Fortis Faridabad, ¡°Avascular necrosis is a disease whereby bone tissue dies due to impaired blood flow. Preventing AVN is done by addressing the risk factors and caring for the bones. Alcohol and tobacco use should be reduced, as they impair blood supply to the bones.¡±
¡°Constant medical supervision of corticosteroid use is advised for long-term use since it poses the risk of AVN. Always keep the joints protected from injury during any physical activity,¡± he adds.?
Early diagnosis and management of diseases like lupus or sickle cell anaemia may also intervene in the prevention of AVN. Periodic health checkups may enable early detection of risks, which will help avoid the condition.
