Who is Gukesh Dommaraju?

Gukesh Dommaraju was born on 29 May 2006, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He grew up in a Telugu-speaking family. His father, Dr Rajinikanth, is an ENT surgeon, and his mother, Dr Padma, is a microbiologist. Gukesh studied at Velammal Nexus School in Chennai, where his love for chess began when he was just seven years old.

As a young boy, Gukesh showed a natural skill for chess. In a 2019 interview at the Gibraltar International Chess Festival, he said, “Chess is so complex, so I just love it. I want to become a world champion.”

By the age of 12, Gukesh had already earned the title of grandmaster, the highest rank in chess. He became the youngest Indian and the third-youngest player in the world to achieve this. His early success paved the way for his journey to becoming a world champion.
