Amare, an eastern lowland?gorilla?who is a resident at Chicago¡¯s Lincoln Park Zoo is apparently so fond of staring at a phone screen that he didn¡¯t notice when another gorilla charged him. Now, his addiction to smartphones has cost him screen time.?
Till now we'd heard of teenagers being addicted to their smartphones, even parents at times. But imagine a gorilla having this addiction.?
The gorilla obviously doesn't have his own smartphone but zoo-goers keep showing the creature pictures and videos on their phones through the glass divider. That keeps him captivated.?
This addiction got so bad for the gorilla that the zookeepers had to add a rope in addition to the glass divider to keep people away from the gorilla as much as possible. Moreover, if anyone still tries to show the gorilla videos and pictures, the keepers step in and ask people to not do so.?
According to the zookeepers, Amare gets distracted by the bright displays and they are trying to cut down his screen time.
Stephen Ross, the director of the zoo¡¯s Lester E. Fisher Center for the Study and Conservation of Apes, told the?Chicago-Sun Times, "We are growing increasingly concerned that too much of his time is taken looking through people¡¯s photos, we really prefer that he spend much more time with his troop mates learning to be a gorilla."
The problem here is that the more Amare seems interested in the phones, the more people want to show them.?
However, the positive news here is that Amare is not having any withdrawal symptoms like depression or insomnia as such. In fact, he is showing some positive effects.?¡°Amare is realising that it¡¯s not really worth it for him to sit there in that corner, waiting for someone to come up and show him their phone,¡± Ross said.?
Amare lives with three other male 'bachelor' gorillas, all in their teens and completely separated from an enclosure that contains a family group that includes a dominant male.
¡°It¡¯s a typical sort of frat party, there¡¯s a lot of playing, but there¡¯s also some aggression and a lot of figuring out who¡¯s the boss in that group,¡± Ross explained.
Ross, however, is impressed with Amare's behaviour and is asking even humans to learn from him. So, looks like it's not just humans, even animals can get addicted to smartphones.??
