Some very mysterious things are happening in Chile which is leaving scientists and researchers baffled.?
A huge and unusual sinkhole, which currently stands at 25 metres wide and 200 metres deep, appeared out of nowhere in the commune of Tierra Amarilla in Northern Chile.?
But that is not it. The scary part about this is how?the hole is still expanding. Aerial footage captured by drones shows the massive hole, which is reportedly 82 feet (maybe a lot more) in diameter.
This entire phenomenon?is being investigated by the National Service of Geology and Mining (Sernageomin). The scientists came to know about this on Saturday. The researchers found out that the cater is located on a vast piece of land in the Atacama region, which is reportedly operated by Canada's Ludin Mining copper mine.
¡°There is a considerable distance, approximately 200 meters (656 feet), to the bottom. ¡°We haven¡¯t detected any material down there, but we have seen the presence of a lot of water,¡± said David Montenegro, the director of the National Service of Geology and Mining (Sernageomin).
Apparently, Lundin Mining copper mine is said to have shuttered parts of the Alcaparrosa mine that were located close to the crater. However, they claimed the area was stable and there was no impact on personnel, equipment or infrastructure.
In a statement released on Monday afternoon, Lundin Mining said the sinkhole did not affect any workers or community members."The closest home is more than 600 meters (1,969 feet) away while any populated area or public service is almost a kilometre away from the affected zone," the statement read.
Despite the fact that the crater does not pose any immediate threat?to the people of the region, Cristobal Zuniga, the mayor of the local commune, said people have always expressed concerns about being surrounded by mining deposits."We are concerned since it is a fear that we have always had as a community, the fact we are surrounded by mining deposits and subterranean works under our community," said Mayor Zuniga.
He added: "It is still active, it is still growing and it is something that has not previously been seen in our community."
Lundin Mining owns 80% of the property and the rest is held by Japan's Sumitomo Corporation.
This definitely is some Stranger Things type of?phenomenon.?
