NASA resorted to YouTube to reveal an intriguing video of two tomatoes that had been lost for months.?
A few days ago, astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) announced the discovery of two missing space-grown tomatoes that had been missing for eight months.?
The announcement sparked outrage on social media, with some questioning how they look after such a long period. NASA responded on YouTube, writing that the tomatoes are 'dehydrated and slightly squished' but have no 'visible microbial or fungal growth'.
"Nearly a year after astronaut Frank Rubio accidentally lost track of them while harvesting for the XROOTS experiment, two rogue tomatoes have been recovered, proving Rubio did not eat the tomatoes as previously suspected. The rogue fruit was discovered in a plastic bag, dehydrated and slightly squashed, with some discoloration but no visible microbial or fungal growth," NASA stated.
"XROOTS grows plants without soil or other growth media using hydroponic and aeroponic techniques." Due to bulk, maintenance, and sanitation difficulties, current plant systems may not scale effectively in a space environment.?
"NASA shared that XROOT's soil-less techniques could provide suitable solutions for plant systems required for future space exploration missions."?
"Research aboard the space station is advancing the technology and scientific knowledge needed to successfully grow plants in space and help humans push the boundaries of space travel," the agency said in a statement. Watch the video here.
