The Korean entertainment industry is mourning the tragic loss of actress Kim Sae Ron, who passed away at the age of 24. According to Korean media reports, Kim, who was found deceased at her residence in Seoul on Sunday, took her own life. Her funeral was held on Monday, attended by friends, former co-stars, and other industry professionals, including A-listers Han So Hee and Kim Won Bin, who worked with her on the movie The Man from Nowhere. The sombre occasion saw many celebrities paying their respects to the late actress, with some visibly distraught.
However, the outpouring of grief and tributes after Sae Ron's death has also sparked criticism. Some fans and netizens have expressed disappointment and frustration, feeling that the same level of support and attention was not afforded to her during her difficult times.
Han So Hee and Won Bin were among the many Korean stars who paid their respects to the late Kim Sae Ron at her funeral. Han So Hee, known for her role in Gyeongseong Creature, was visibly emotional, staying at the funeral home for over an hour, clearly overwhelmed by the loss of her colleague.
Won Bin, who shared a close bond with Kim Sae Ron after working together on the 2010 film The Man from Nowhere, was also deeply affected by her passing. He was seen wiping away tears while talking to acquaintances.
Other Korean celebrities who paid their respects to Kim Sae Ron included Kim Bo Ra, AKMU's Lee Chan Hyuk and Lee Su Hyun, and TV host Jang Sung Kyu, who visited the funeral hall. Additionally, memorial wreaths were sent by notable stars such as Lee Na Young, Cha Eun Woo, Seo Ye Ji, IU, Gong Myung, and FT Island.
Many netizens have expressed disappointment and frustration with Korean celebrities, feeling that the industry should have shown more support and solidarity with Kim Sae Ron after her DUI incident in 2022, which significantly impacted the rising star's finances, allegedly sending her into a dark place.
After videos of Han So Hee and Kim Won Bin, among other celebs, went viral on social media, netizens lashed out at the Korean film industry and top stars for keeping quiet against bullying despite the industry losing many young talents.
One wrote, "When you die, people cry and beg for you to come back, but when you're here, they don't even show they care about you."
Another shared the harsh reality of Korean showbiz, writing, "I don't think anyone should choose the entertainment industry in South Korea because of how badly they are treated and how many idols and actors lost their lives."
A third noted, "People will shower you with flowers once you die; they will come running once they know you died but won¡¯t reach to you when you are alive, and even a single flower will be expensive, so that says a lot about humans. I feel so sorry that young people choosing to die than fighting useless people made them suffer so much that they had no option to escape the reality; they chose death as their escape. RIP, my girl."
"This death circle won't end unless they change their culture of bullying," another person mentioned.
