The ancient structure is situated in Lingampet village of Kamareddy district and is a flourishing tourist sight all thanks to its unique architectural style. Located in between Yellareddy and Lingampet, it is popularly known as Naganna Baavi (Naganna's well).
Historians have determined that the depth of the stepwell is 100 feet and it was built by Lingamma Desai who lived there in the 18th century.?
The primary motive of the stepwell was to provide water for drinking and irrigation purposes in the area.?
The village Lingampet is named after Lingamma Desai - Jaksani Naganna overlooked the construction of the stepwell which is why it is also called Naganna Baavi which translates to Naganna's well. However, there is no water in this stepwell now.?
The brilliant architecture of the huge stepwell is made up of five levels where each level is at least 20 feet high. There are stairs built around the well - according to reports, the width of the stairs on the west side of the wall is greater than the other banks so that horses and elephants could easily access drinking water.?
The stepwell also has rooms on both sides of each level. Local people believe that the rooms were built to provide shelter to those who wanted to change their clothes after bathing in the well.?
There are also stairs built on all eight sides of the well to make it easier for people to reach the well.?
A News18 report suggests that locals are requesting the authorities to restore the stepwell and transform it into a proper tourist destination. People from nearby areas have been visiting the well to experience the marvellous ancient structure.?
