Former co-founder and managing director of the Indian banking company BharatPe, Ashneer Grover, made a video rant. Grover, who connected with the public while being on the reality television show Shark Tank India as one of the judges, criticised the tax system in his most emotional speech, explaining how government employees effectively work just five months out of the year due to excessive taxation. This viral outburst has sparked a countrywide debate in India about tax reform, government responsibility, and the weight of taxation.??
Ashneer claimed that India's tax system is unjust and that paying taxes here is like receiving a "punishment" since the government withholds between 30 and 40% of wage earners' income without delivering tangible advantages.
Ravisutanjani has shared the video on his Twitter handle with the caption, "Income Tax Payers Pays upto 18% GST too on spends after paying 10-35% Taxes They Contribute to Nation Building, But this is also Harsh Reality."
Grover added that paying taxes is the same as doing charity and that out of the 12 months, we labour for a living, 4 months are spent working for the government. "You work for the government for five months out of a year when you know I'll get Rs 10 and the government will keep Rs 4." How long do you have to labour as a slave for the government? "This is how things are, and we all accept it," Grover added.
The former Shark Tank India judge argued that because company owners are aware of this, they do not pay taxes, unlike salaried workers, who have no option because the tax is withdrawn immediately at the source as TDS.
In India, Ashneer Grover's impassioned diatribe over taxes has become a rallying cry for reform. His viral video sparked a national debate on tax reform, government accountability, and government employees' obstacles. It is a forceful reminder that public dissatisfaction cannot be ignored any longer and that immediate efforts must be made to build a fairer and more efficient tax system that benefits all residents.?
Since the video was shared on social media, it has gotten over 99.4K views, 484 retweets, 33 quotes, 2,198 likes, and 145 bookmarks.??
One of the users said, "Absolutely a preposterous argument! You are also paying for the services you get from the government. There is a better need for tax money direction. Unnecessary distribution of freebies is ridiculous too."
Another said, "What about those bikers on the national highways? Pays zero toll, and use full benefits, when it's not even legalBut again bikers are more in number and somehow represent again that concept of "garib bhai", and no government can dare to upset them."?
The next person said, "Need not to forget that the income tax we pay goes into the defense budget which for sure is very important for all of us. So saying this is completely wrong that our income tax is not for our benefit and is a charity."
