On Friday, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated India¡¯s new milestone, the first-ever 3D-printed post office in the country. The post office building, which has been fully developed with the use of 3D printing technology, was set up in Bengaluru.
The building that was made with 3D printers is situated at the Cambridge Layout in the city, which is surrounded by a built-up area of 1,021 square feet and will be put to use after the inauguration.??
Larsen & Toubro Limited worked on the post office building, according to postal officials. The company undertook the construction while IIT Madras provided technical guidance on the project.
After inaugurating the state-of-the-art project, the Union Minister said, "The spirit of development, the spirit of developing our own technology, the spirit of doing something that was considered impossible in earlier times. That's the defining feature of these times."??
Talking about the unique building, Vaishnaw explained that the new construction method used 3D-concrete printing technology, a fully automated construction technology in which a robotic printer deposits the concrete layer after layer much like a human worker would.
The construction is carried out by the machine as per the approved design. Special-grade concrete is used in the project because it hardens quickly, ensuring easy and fast bonding between the layers to print the structure.
The entire construction of the structure was done and dusted in just 45 days, which is a shocker compared to the six or eight months it would have taken the conventional human workforce to build up the structure.
Not just human effort, but using 3D printing techniques has proven a trump card against cost and time-saving issues as well. Vaishnaw told reporters after the inauguration of the Bengaluru?post office on Friday, "IIT Madras has done fabulous work on this. When this technology will become mainstream, we will see more such initiatives on taking this technology forward."
