A recent video of a London doctor speaking fluent Sylheti Bengali is taking the internet by storm. For those unfamiliar, Sylheti is a Bengali dialect often considered a language of its own.
The British doctor in the clip is seen speaking fluent Bengali with an anchor who is visibly impressed by the doctor and her conviction for her work, which led her to learn the language in the first place.
The woman in the viral video has been identified as Dr. Anna Livingstone. She is a retired GP in Limehouse, East London. She explained in the video while speaking Sylheti Bengali that she learned the language back in the 1980s when there were no translators to help her communicate with the patients.
In the clip, Livingstone is being interviewed by the London Bangla Voice. She talks about how her patients back then only knew Bengali and had not an inkling of English on their tongues, which pushed her to learn the foreign language even more.
People online were impressed by the doctor¡¯s efforts to learn the language for her patients, imagining that it would not have been easy to learn the language at all as it does not yet have a standard script.
Twitter user Halima Khan shared the video on the platform and wrote, ¡°I¡¯m in tears because she¡¯s saying she learned Bengali in the 80¡¯s to understand her patients because there were no interpreters. This is British pride, she should be a household name.¡±
She also continued in another tweet, ¡°Her contributions to society is outstanding and it came from a pure,? selfless, kind heart! In a time where there is so much negativity, we desperately need more heroes as examples. She is one of the many we don¡¯t even know of! Her learning such a difficult language like Bengali - saved many many lives.¡±
