In the West Midlands of England, the elderly Indian Sikh?woman's case has garnered widespread community support since it was first reported in 2019. Her supporters are fighting for her deportation.
An online petition that was started in July 2020 and has received over 65,000 signatures states that Gurmit Kaur, 78, moved to Smethwick after arriving in the UK in 2009.?Recently, as the neighbourhood has continued to support the widow, "We Are All Gurmit Kaur" has been trending on social media.
According to the change.org petition, Gurmit Kaur does not have any family in Punjab, India, or the UK to return to. Thus, the Sikh community in Smethwick has taken her in.
Gurmit Kaur, who has no family in Punjab, India, has applied to stay but has been turned down.
According to the UK Home Office, Kaur can reintegrate into her village in Punjab?because she is in contact with the locals there.?However, Kaur's experience has been torturous, as described by Salman Mirza, an immigration advisor from the Brushstroke Community Project. Mirza, who initiated the petition and is actively involved in assisting her with the visa appeals process, shared these details with the BBC.
"She lives in a run-down, roofless house in the village and has to find resources, food, and heating in a village she hasn't visited in eleven years.?It feels like a slow death from water torture," said Mirza.?He declared, "She's never had the right to work and support herself."
According to a Home Office spokesman, "All applications are carefully considered on their merits and the basis of the evidence provided."?
According to reports, when Gurmit Kaur moved in with her son in 2009, it was for the purpose of attending a wedding. She later became estranged from her family and had to rely on the goodwill of others.
