In a bid to acknowledge the compassion shown by the Sikh community during the Delhi communal violence, a Muslim groom decided to tie a turban during his wedding ceremony.?
According to reports,?the groom, Abdul Hakeem, a resident of Fatehgarh Sahib¡¯s Panjoli village, and his friends wore a turban for the March 1 wedding.??
Showing solidarity with the Sikhs who helped Muslims and gave them food and shelter amid the violence in Delhi, Hakeem and many of the guests donned turbans.?
Instead of commenting on his decision or disallowing Hakeem, his family was fully supportive and understood the significance behind his gesture.?His in-laws also appreciated his move and were proud of it.?
According?The Tribune, Abdul¡¯s?father-in-law, Saleem Khan, was proud of the decision, and said, ¡°People are still congratulating me, as it was a one-of-a-kind gesture. Abdul had told us in advance that he would sport a turban in the honour of Sikhs who rescued Muslims in Delhi, and give the message of communal harmony. We were happy with his decision.¡±
The Tribune also reported him saying, ¡°A true Muslim is identified not only by his cap, but also by his honesty. In the same vein, a true Sikh¡¯s identity is?not only his turban but also his?Gursikhi.
A Gidderbaha resident said, ¡°The bond among people from all communities should remain intact. We must confront them by setting an example of communal harmony, as Abdul has done.¡±??
During the Delhi riots, all gurdwaras in the national capital are open for shelter riot; victims will also be provided with food and other needs.
The?International Sikh Charity, Khalsa Aid was also on the streets of Delhi, offering help to the riot victims. Khalsa Aid India?team assessed the ground situation and distributed emergency food items like milk and biscuits to the affected victims irrespective of religion, caste or class?
Apart from this, during the recent Delhi riots, an Amnesty International video of Sikh and Muslim men exchanging skull caps and turbans went viral as a message of solidarity.?
Even in times of chaos, violence and communal turmoil in Delhi, people from different communities came together to lend a helping hand and that restored all our faith in humanity.?
