The innocent glee of kids can sometimes result in a delightful disruption, testing the patience of other diners and challenging the balance between enjoyment and inconvenience.
During a recent visit to Toccoa Riverside Restaurant in Georgia, Lyndsey Landmann and her family and friends faced an unexpected $50 charge on their bill. The reason? The restaurant cited their children as being "too loud."
The Blue Ridge restaurant in Georgia has included several footnotes on its food menu, covering matters of etiquette and payment.
Among these, there are conventional reminders like "please show respect to our staff," but one particular note that immediately drew Lyndsey's attention stated:
¡°Adult surcharge: For adults unable to parent."?¡°I remember thinking, ¡®No way is this real,'"?she told Today.
"I even commented halfway through the meal, ¡®I can¡¯t believe how well-behaved they are.¡¯¡±
Initially, she believed he was coming over to compliment the families. However, Richter surprised them by explaining the "adult surcharge" and informing them of a $50 fee for the children's excessive noise and outdoor activities. Lyndsey described the encounter as "alarming."
¡°I was like, 'They were quiet the whole time.' He got in our faces and told us that we belonged at Burger King and not at his restaurant,"?she said.
"We asked to speak to the owner, and he said he was the owner. I looked around the restaurant, and everybody was frozen, watching this show he was putting on. He was yelling."
A snapshot of the restaurant's parenting fee went viral on Reddit after being shared earlier this week.?
While the restaurant did not provide a response to people's inquiries, an employee conveyed over the phone to Today, "We're not going to comment on a policy we've had for years. We just want to live in the woods and cook."
