Mattel, the top toy manufacturer, has extended an apology after a bizarre misprint on the packaging of its new Wicked dolls. The new line of dolls, being rolled out as a companion piece to Ariana Grande and Cynthia Arivo's new film Wicked, also features a singing element.
The apology from Mattel came after eagle-eyed fans noticed an error on the packaging where a link to an adult website appeared instead of the Wicked movie website address. The error affects the packaging of Glinda and Elphaba dolls, played by Ariana and Cynthia respectively, in the film.
?The toy company in a statement said, ¡°Mattel was made aware of a misprint on the packaging of the Mattel Wicked collection dolls, primarily sold in the U.S., which intended to direct consumers to the official?WickedMovie.com?landing page."
It also advised customers who have already purchased the dolls with the misprinted website links to discard the boxes. The company also asked fans to reach out to its customer service in case of any further guidance on the matter.?
Mattel added, ¡°We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy this. Parents are advised that the misprinted, incorrect website is not appropriate for children. Consumers who already have the product are advised to discard the product packaging or obscure the link and may contact Mattel Customer Service for further information.¡±
After the pictures of the misprint went viral on social media, Mattel's entire doll collection inspired by the Universal movie was removed from sale at Target and is being pulled from shelves at various retailers, including, Walmart, Kohl's, and Best Buy among others. The recall aims to correct the mistake and ensure accurate information on the packaging. The collection was mostly being sold in the US.?
Directed by Jon M. Chu, the musical fantasy film stars, Ariana Grande as Glinda the Good Witch and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba (Wicked Witch of the West). It also features Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum and Ethan Slater in pivotal roles.
