Zoe Saldana has won the best supporting actress Oscar at the Academy Awards 2025 for her role in Emilia Perez.?
In her acceptance speech, Saldana opened up about her grandmother, who came to the United States from the Dominican Republic in 1961, who would be proud to see her win. She continued to say that Ą°the fact that IĄŻm getting an award for a role where I got to sing and speak in Spanish, my grandmother, if she were here, she would be so delighted."
Saldana had a unanimous victory as a supporting actress in the run-up to the Oscars, including the Golden Globe, BAFTA, and SAG awards.
Saldana was the pacesetter for the award because of her high-powered performance in Jacques AudiardĄŻs musical crime film. She was nominated for her role as Rita Moro Castro in "Emilia P¨Śrez." Well, after the deserving win, the actor got emotional during her acceptance speech.?
As this is Saldana's first Oscar nomination and victory, she highlights that she is a "proud child of immigrant parents with dreams and dignity and hardworking hands." However, she earlier told the reporters that she was able to pull off her role as Rita because she could incorporate her own experiences as a daughter of immigrants.?
She further mentioned in her speech that she is the first American of Dominican origin to win an Oscar and "I know I will not be the last," she added.?
Zoe, 46, is known for her role in James Cameron's Avatar franchise and has starred in four of her six highest-grossing films of all time, including the top three parts of Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Avengers: Endgame.?
She is the third Latina to win the award, but she is the first to win for not playing Anita in "West Side Story." Saldana beat out Monica Barbaro in "A Complete Unknown," Ariana Grande in 'Wicked, and Felicity Jones in "The Brutalist."
