Bank Holidays October 2022: There Are 21 Bank Holidays This Month, Full List Here

After the list of bank holidays in September 2022, it’s time for a new list to take over. October comes packed with important festivals and celebrations across the country.?

Many private and public sector banks will remain closed next month due to additional bank holidays. Banks will be shut for 21 days in October 2022 Including second and fourth Saturdays and Sundays. As per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, banks will be closed on all public holidays with some regional holidays depending on the particular state. Regional holidays are decided by respective state governments.

The month of October observes 21 bank holidays and the first holiday starts from Gandhi Jayanti on October 2. Other holidays like Durga Puja and Dussehra or Vijayadashami will be observed on October 5, 2022. Diwali or Deepawali?falls on October 24, and this holiday is being observed?by all banks in India except some states.

Bank holidays in October 2022:

People will not face any problems in bank-related work as holidays are not frequent or are for short intervals. ATMs, cash deposits, online banking?and?mobile banking will continue to function. These holidays may vary from state to state as holidays are determined keeping in view the local festivals.

According to RBI guidelines, banks will be closed on Sundays as well as on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. Under the Negotiable Instruments Act, RBI has declared these?holidays in October 2022: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 13, 14, 18, 24, 25, 26, 27 and 31. Apart from this, there are five Sundays in the month.

According to the Reserve Bank's calendar, apart from the weekends, there are 14 bank holidays state-wise, in October 2022. The central government has divided the holidays into three categories, under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. These three categories include Holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, Real-Time Gross Settlement Holidays and Banks’ Closing of Accounts.

1. October 1 - Half Yearly Closing of Bank Accounts

Banks will be closed in Sikkim for any public service due to the half-yearly closing of bank accounts on October 1. The annual financial event called 'half yearly closing' is held every year on September 30 and October 1 in the state. These two days will focus on closing their accounts, tackling their balance sheets and a round of business accounts, and settling various payments.

2. October 2 - Sunday & Gandhi Jayanti Holiday

All the private and government banks will remain shut across the country on Sunday, October 2. The day also marks the 153rd birth anniversary of the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi. This day is also called Gandhi Jayanti.

3. October 3 - Durga Puja (Maha Ashtami)

Banks will remain closed due to Durga Puja (Maha Ashtami) in Tripura, Odisha, Sikkim, Assam, Manipur, West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand.

4. October 4 - Durga Puja/Dussehra (Maha Navami)/Ayudha pooja/Janmotsav of Srimanta Sankardeva

Banks will be closed on the occasion of Durga Puja/Dussehra (Maha Navami)/Ayudha pooja/Janmotsav of Srimanta Sankardeva in many parts of the country like - Tripura, Karnataka, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Sikkim, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, Kerala on October 4, Tuesday.

5. October 5 - Durga Puja/Dussehra (Vijaya Dashmi)/Janmotsav of Srimanta Sankardeva

The most auspicious festival of Dussehra, also known as Vijaydashmi, is around the corner and celebrated with great enthusiasm in India. On this day Lord Rama killed Ravana, and Goddess Durga triumphed over the buffalo Demon Mahishasura. That is why the day is also referred to as the 'victory of good over evil'.?

On this day, effigies of Ravana, his brother Kumbhakaran and his son Meghnath are burnt with fireworks--symbolising the quelling of darkness by light--across the country. Ramlila's stages are based on Ramayan and Ramcharitmanas and are organised for 10 days across the country.?

6. October 6 - Durga Puja (Dashain)

Banks will remain closed on the next day of Dussehra on Thursday, October 6, 2022, due to the celebration of Durga Puja (Dasain) in Sikkim. Durga Puja (Dashain) is one of the important and major festivals among Hindu Nepalese of Sikkim that is dedicated to Goddess Durga.

7. October 7 - Durga Puja (Dashain)

Banks will remain closed on Friday, October 7, 2022, due to the celebration of Durga Puja (Dasain) in Sikkim.

8. October 8 - Second Saturday Holiday and Milad-i-Sherif/Eid-i-Milad-ul-Nabi (Birthday of Prophet Muhammed)

Banks will be closed across the country on the second Saturday of the month, on October 8. People in several cities and states like Madhya Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Kerala will celebrate Id-E-Milad/Eid-e-Miladunnabi/Milad-i-Sherif (Prophet Mohammad’s birthday)/Baravafat on Saturday, October 8, 2022.?

9. October 9 - Sunday

Banks remain closed across the country on Sunday, October 9, 2022, a weekly off.

10. October 13 - Karva Chauth

Banks will be closed in Himachal Pradesh on the occasion of karva chauth on Thursday, October 13, 2022. Karwa chauth vrat which falls on the fourth day of the dark fortnight in the Kartika month every year is considered to be an important festival among married and unmarried women in India.?

On this day women across the country observe a one-day ‘Nirjala’ fast which means they neither eat nor take a drop of water during the day for the safety and long life of their husbands.

11. October 14 - Friday following Eid-i-Milad-ul-Nabi

Banks will be closed on the occasion of Eid-i-Milad-ul-Nabi in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, October 14, 2022.

12. October 16 - Sunday?

All the banks in the country will remain closed on their weekly off on Sunday, October 16, 2022.

13. October 18 - Kati Bihu

Banks across Sikkim will be closed on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, on the occasion of Kati Bihu, an important Assamese festival of Assam. Also known as Kongali Bihu the festival marks the relocation of the rice crop and the beginning of the fresh harvest season that falls on the first day of the ‘Kati’ month in the Assamese calendar.

14. October 22 - fourth Saturday

Banks across the country will be closed on the fourth Saturday, October 22, 2022.

15. October 23 - Sunday?

All the banks in the country remain closed on their weekly off on Sunday, October 23, 2022.

16. October 24 - Kali Puja/Deepavali/Diwali (Laxmi Pujan)/Naraka Chaturdashi)

Banks will be closed across the country except for Sikkim, Telangana, and Manipur on the occasion of Kali Puja/Deepavali/Diwali (Laxmi Pujan)/Naraka Chaturdashi on October 24, 2022 (Monday). The festival celebrated on the fourteenth day in the dark phase of Ashwin month and 20 days after Dussehra is one of the most auspicious and popular festivals which is celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy across the country. The festival of Diwali, also called the festival of lights, is celebrated on the new moon day of Kartik month.?

Not just Hindu festivals, people from different communities also celebrate this bright festival. It is believed that Lord Rama, Sita and Laxman returned to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. The people of Ayodhya rejoiced by lighting up diyas (earthen lamps) across the kingdom, distributing sweets and by setting off firecrackers.?

17. October 25 - Laxmi Puja/Deepawali/Govardhan Pooja

Banks will be closed in serval Indian states - Sikkim, Telangana, Rajasthan, and Manipur due to Laxmi Puja/Deepawali/Govardhan Pooja on October 25, 2022, Tuesday.?

18. October 26 - Govardhan Pooja/Vikram Samvant New Year Day/Bhai Bij/Bhai Duj/Diwali (Bali Pratipada)/Laxmi Puja/Accession Day

On the occasion of Govardhan Pooja/Vikram Samvant New Year Day/Bhai Bij/Bhai Duj/Diwali (Bali Pratipada)/Laxmi Puja/Accession Day banks remain closed in Gujarat, Belapur, Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Mumbai, Nagpur, Himachal Pradesh. Accession Day in Jammu and Srinagar on Sunday, 26 October 2021. The Day is a public holiday in Jammu and Srinagar, commemorating 26 October 1947, when Maharaja Hari Singh signed off the Instrument of Accession, in which Jammu and Kashmir joined the Dominion of India.

19. October 27 - Bhaidooj/Chitragupt Jayanti/Laxmi Puja/Deepawali/Ningol Chakkouba

Banks will be closed in Sikkim, Manipur, and Uttar Pradesh on the occasion of Bhaidooj/Chitragupt Jayanti/Laxmi Puja/Deepawali/Ningol Chakkouba on October 27, 2022, Thursday.

20. October 30 - Sunday

All the banks in the country remain closed on their weekly off on Sunday, October 31, 2022.

21. October 31 - Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s Birthday/Surya Pashti Dala Chhath (Morning ardhya)/Chhath Puja

Banks remain shut on Monday, October 31, on the occasion of Vallabhbhai Patel’s Birthday/Surya Pashti Dala Chhath (Morning ardhya)/Chhath Puja in Jharkhand, Bihar, and Gujarat.

As per the RBI rules, there are three categorized holidays and they are as follows:

1. Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act

2. Holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act and Real-Time Gross Settlement Holiday

3. Banks' Closing of Accounts
