The Nilgiri Marten, once common in the lush forests and grasslands of the Western Ghats, which span the southern states of Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, is on the verge of extinction, and has been classified as 'Vulnerable' on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. The reasons for its dwindling population are numerous.
According to experts, habitat degradation and fragmentation have had a significant influence on the population.To address the urgent need for conservation, the Tamil Nadu government established the "TN Endangered Species Conservation Fund."
