Kanakadasa Jayanthi 2024: Kanakadasa Jayanthi is a public holiday in Karnataka is being celebrated on Monday, November 18th this year. This day marks the birth anniversary of the renowned poet, Shri Kanakadasa, and is observed as Kanakadasa Jayanthi by the Government of Karnataka.
Kanakadasa Jayanthi falls on the 18th day of Kartik Month as per the Hindu Lunar Calendar. Shri Kanaka Dasa, a celebrated figure in Carnatic music, was a gifted writer, poet, composer, and social reformer. He made significant contributions to Carnatic music and is remembered as a key influencer of this rich tradition.
Kanakadasa Jayanthi is a cultural festival that holds great importance in Karnataka. It unites people to honour Kanakadasa, the revered saint, poet, and philosopher. On this day, various events are held throughout the state, including lectures about Kanakadasa's life and works, bhajans, and musical performances.
Kanakadasa (1509¨C1606) was a revered saint, poet, philosopher and one of the greatest devotees of Lord Krishna (Vishnu) from Karnataka, India. He followed Madhvacharya's Dvaita Vedanta philosophy and was a disciple of Vyasatirtha. Often referred to as Daasashreshta Kanakadasa, he was known for his devotional compositions in Kannada, including keertanas and ugabhoga for Carnatic music. Like other Haridasas, he used simple Kannada and local poetic styles in his works.
Born into a Kannada-speaking family in Baada village, near Bankapura in Karnataka, Kanakadasa initially served as a warrior at the Bankapura fort. He was educated by Srinivasacharya and gained expertise in tarka (logic), vyakarana (grammar), and mimamsa (interpretation of scriptures) at a young age. According to one of his writings, Kanakadasa was injured in battle and turned to chanting the name of Lord Hari (Krishna) for solace. In a significant moment, a beggar appeared before him and revealed himself as Lord Hari. Lord Hari offered Kanakadasa three wishes:
- To heal his injuries.
-To appear whenever Kanakadasa called him.
-To grant him a vision in his true form.
These wishes were granted, and upon witnessing the Lord¡¯s original form, Kanakadasa was awestruck. This experience led him to abandon his life as a soldier and dedicate himself to music, literature, and spreading devotion to Lord Hari. Some of his notable early works include Narasimha Stotra, Ramadhyana Mantra, and Mohanatarangini.
Kanakadasa had a strong connection to Udupi, where he was a disciple of Vyasatirtha. However, due to caste discrimination, the temple priests denied him entry to the mutt (monastery). Legend has it that the idol of Krishna in the temple turned to face Kanakadasa, symbolising divine acceptance. This miraculous event is remembered as a significant part of his life.
Kanakadasa often used the phrase "Kagineleya Adikeshava" as his signature, referring to the deity of his birthplace, Kaginele.
Kanakadasa Jayanthi is one of the most significant and widely celebrated festivals in Karnataka, especially among the Kuruba Gowda community. However, its importance is recognised across the entire state, and it is observed as a regional public holiday. This day honours Kanakadasa, a revered saint and musician known for his epic compositions such as Keertanas and Ugabhoga.
