The traditional Hindi expression, "Dharti nigal gai ya aasman kha gaya [The Earth swallowed or the sky ate it]," appears to have come to life after an asteroid racing towards Earth misses it.?
The large asteroid 2024 ON, twice the length of a cricket pitch and travelling at a worrying speed of 40,233 km/h, missed Earth on September 17. The Atlas Sky Survey identified the possibly deadly 720-foot asteroid on July 27; it will come closest to Earth tomorrow, September 17.? ?
As the asteroid safely sailed by Earth, social media users lost no time in converting the near-miss into a meme-worthy occasion, flooding timelines with witty "disappointment" posts.?
One X (previously known as Twitter) user joined in the fun with a vintage Hera Pheri meme, incorporating Paresh Rawal's memorable dialogue, "Ab tak toh usko aa jana chahiye tha [By now, it should have reached]," in reference to the massive rock.
Another user commented on Sunny Deol's famed "tareekh par tareekh" dialogue, mourning the asteroid's delayed meeting with Earth. As the enormous rock missed its aim, the meme caught the playful annoyance of waiting. Earth is now awaiting the asteroid's next closest approach on September 17.
And, of course, how could cricket fans not give Dhoni credit for "smashing the asteroid with his bat and saving us all"? For Thala's devoted fans, Dhoni is the ultimate hero¡ªwhether it's winning a nail-biting cricket match or, in this case, saving the earth from a celestial tragedy! After all, for Dhoni's followers, no challenge is too great when their captain is on the pitch!?
Here's what some other people shared.?
